New Insights into Micropollutant Abatement in Ammonia-Containing Water by the UV/Breakpoint Chlorination Process

چکیده

Ultraviolet (UV)/chlorine processes are emerging advanced oxidation (AOPs) for micropollutant abatement. When excessive chlorine (Cl/N mass ratio of >7.6) is applied to ammonia-containing water yield free residual the UV/free AOP, AOP becomes UV/breakpoint chlorination. This study investigated degradation by and radical yields from chlorination under various conditions using benzoic acid (BA) nitrobenzene (NB) as representative micropollutants probes. Two stages were observed. During stage I, BA NB rapidly degraded; this was attributed reactive species generated breakpoint (Rbrk) UV photolysis chlor(am)ines intermediates/products (Rpho). II, followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, unknown irreducible residuals produced greatly contributed generating species, in addition chlorine. At pH 7 an ammonia concentration 1 mg/L N, optimum dosage existed at 9.6 Cl2 due strong scavenging The findings demonstrate that a promising approach degrading refractory real-world applications.

Tylosin abatement in water by photocatalytic process.

The photocatalytic degradation of a macrolide (tylosin) has been studied using immobilized titanium dioxide as photocatalyst in a laboratory reactor under UV illumination (365 nm). The degradation of the antibiotic and of the reaction intermediary product was monitored by UV spectrophotometry and HPLC. Three photocatalysts (P25 from Degussa and PC105 and PC500 from Millennium) immobilized on gl...

Modeling Micropollutant Removal by Ozonation and Chlorination in Potable Water Treatment

Having set general frames for our study [Mandel, 2007] and our software, SimOx, [Mandel et al., 2008] in previous publications, this report aims at giving a brief overview of the experimental part of the research done in 2008. The experiments were divided in two periods: from January to June and from October to the end of the year. During the first period, results were collected to validate a p...

Modelling of Micropollutant Removal by Ozonation and Chlorination in Potable Water Treatment

In regards of increasingly stringent rules on toxicity, prediction engines for potable water treatment have become a necessity. This particularly applies to oxidation steps, where micropollutants should be removed and where potentially harmful by-products may be formed, and has therefore lead to the building up of a new simulator for both chlorination and ozonation. This first report aims at gi...
